Mindfulness Programs for Schools

What if we could include in school practices something that simultaneously develops the ability to focus and pay attention; emotional regulation skills; compassion and empathy, as well as health and well-being?

What if we could include in school practices something that simultaneously develops the ability to focus and pay attention; emotional regulation skills; compassion and empathy, as well as health and well-being?

Many of the challenges experienced in schools today (violence, bullying, indiscipline, teacher burnout) reflect difficulties and a lack of resources to deal with internal experience and regulate emotions. A mindfulness-based approach in a school context emerges as a strategy to promote the socio-emotional skills required in the Profile of Students Leaving Compulsory Education, framed within a human development plan for the growth and empowerment of individuals and the school community.

The Mindfulness Program for Schools has been implemented by our center since 2015. It is a modular program aimed at integrating mindfulness practice into school culture as a way of promoting the health and well-being of everyone in the school. It is based on the curricula of the Mindfulness in Schools Project (UK): paws b (ages 6–10), .b (ages 11–18), and .b Foundations (adults). Evidence-based studies on these programs can be found here.

In mindfulness sessions, we learn how our brain works, how attention functions, and how emotions and thoughts arise, as well as how we can develop greater awareness and intentionality in how we behave and deal with everyday situations. We learn the importance of taking care of ourselves and our mental hygiene for our development and well-being.

How to get started?

1. Introductory session

These sessions are aimed at adults, last 2 hours, and are intended to clarify what mindfulness is and how it is practiced, explore the scientific basis of mindfulness-based interventions, and reflect on how to introduce these practices into the school routine.

2. Mindfulness Program for Students

Aimed at students aged 6 to 18. It follows an adaptation of the .b and paws b programs. It is an engaging and well-received program for students of different ages. The program lasts 8 to 10 weeks, with weekly sessions of 30–45 minutes. It includes support materials for home practice, as well as materials for parents and teachers, as we consider the involvement of all key adults in the child’s life essential.
